AI centre for policing will help catch more criminals quicker

The UK government and the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) have announced the launch of Police.AI, a new £115 million national centre designed to revolutionize law enforcement across England and Wales. Set to launch in April 2026, the centre will centralize the development and testing of AI tools, such as facial recognition and automated call transcription, for all 43 police forces. The initiative is expected to automate over six million hours of administrative work annually—the equivalent of freeing up 3,000 officers for frontline duties—while providing a centralized hub to combat the criminal misuse of AI technology.

To maintain public trust, the rollout is governed by strict ethical standards, including a “Responsible AI Checklist” and a public-facing registry to ensure transparency in how local forces use these tools. By bridging the gap between localized innovation and national implementation, Police.AI aims to speed up investigations, improve victim experiences, and ensure that UK policing remains ahead of increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
